Architectural Technologist – Googles Nest

There is a buz in the press over googles acquisition of Nest, the very nice heating control that's taking the market by storm. The point is that Google seems to be trying, quite successfully, to push the android OS into the home control market with the Goole nest and with the Intel card the size of an SD card, it certainly looks like they are making ground.

What's this to us, well, are we going to have to take notice, will products change, and will heating systems become intelligent, and not reliant on the almost basic equipment and calcs currently in place. I certainly think so.

The quest for us, and the CPD here, is to track what Google is doing, who they are aquiring and how they will push android into the building industry. We have already seen locks and home security being targeted with a number of “E” locks coming onto the market.

What else, well sensors within the house are almost there, I did a report to ICAT as an abstract on sensors technology using backscatter technology to power them for almost ever. The quest as far as I can see is to watch this with even more than a passing interest and see what else we might have to consider. my fear is that we migh wel be forced into a fajita comply, and the power of Google will squash the other players.

Windows and doors might seem the next big thing, closing on there own, locking and opening to allow ventilation if the “next” wants it. Power generation via solar, is also now almost main stream, will the nest together with android! Control it's use, even demand you install solar tech.

One or two people in the know, seemed to think apple was in talks to acquire Nest, but this move by google is making them the almost dominant player, if the regulatory people approve the purchase, and I can't see why not.

Oh and take a look at the car industry, several big manufacturers are now using android, both as the interface for our coms, and also as the running system. apple is seriously lagging behind.

My other problem is, should I now reconsider my next phone as a Next with android OS, not apple! just because of this! I need to learn about android and using a google phone will make me understand. You will see from the article yesterday, that I use google and their docs rather a lot, to write and generate documents for my students and linking with friends! plus the embedding I like to do.

As far as estate set up and planning, is concerned, should we make sure that the likes of BT and other laying cables have access, to each house, bt has their system, but even with new houses, they have to rely on fibre to the street box's and copper to the remaining small but significant stretch to the house, and here we might look at what Google is doing to there test city Kansas in the USA.

Architectural Technologist – Shipping Container Architecture

Carroll House Shipping Container HomeI love this style of accommodation,  Shipping Container Architecture provides such a useful pre made yet oddly satisfying Architecture.

The more I see of it, the more I want to try it out, sadly we have not gone that far,,,, yet, but there is still time.

One of my students at Gloucester is using this subject as part of a project, it will be interesting to see what hey come up with, but until then have a look at the Designboom site, there are some very interesting projects.

Architectural Technologist – The live living aware house

Internal monitor

Internal monitor

The route to a live, aware. Connected house is almost upon us, and at a price that can be absorbed by most without breaking the bank. And it's all down to several technologies coming together.

The lead is of course Raspbery PI the small linux computer that is powered by no more than a mobile phone power adaptor, but it can run a small house with ease. The next item is backscatter technology, small cards that play upon the ever increasing wifi and tv signals all about us. Next comes solar power, even a small panel has enought to power a raspbery PI for a short while.

Last but not least, Lego mindstorm, the robotic end of Lego, that provide sensors and other very useful componants that can easily be used with raspbery P&O create a home system that can protect! monitor and run a small house! all for less than £100

Scratch, the children programing utility for Raspbery PI adds the means and programing, although I can easily see this being replaced with a dedicated program.

Put all this together and we have a cheap easy to use system, easily accessed by my iPad.

Today's picture is of a house monitor my son uses to keep a watch on my grandchild, so easily built into the PI and so much cheaper.

My appologies for the lack of blogs this week, lecturing is not simply an attendance at college and staining in front of a class, it requires a lot, and I mean a lot of planning, research, and Gathering of tools making sure small thing like batteries are charged, so the blog has after four years of almost constant daily blogging, taken a back seat for the middle of the week. But the weekend is still mine and if I can, I will try and get your fix of CPD info and links to you.

Architectural Technologist – A clean home office

So what's the weekend bringing, not a lot really, certainly no CPD, although I have been thinking of a couple of things I might do, for one my book collection needs sorting, I had a huge influx of paper books Friday so that needs some attention, I have a couple of bids in for Rupert annuals, and my kindle should be arriving, I went for the basic version, I figures that for the most part , I use my iPad to read most of my electronic books, but outside the light just wipes the screen, so for the odd occasion I'm outside the kindle will do nicely.

My study needs a bit of a tidy, I have papers and old files in boxes, that needs an archive, so i'm off to staples for at least three storage card boxes. I never thought when I started my business, that it would generate so much paper, despite my best efforts to go electronic, and I have to keep it, bummer.

My switch to an Internet phone number seems to be going well, I have in my home office a separate bt line, with broad band and a telephone, but the number seems to attract all sorts of unwanted calls, plus if I am out of the office I had to pay to transfer calls to Skype, so I have opted for a Skype land line number that I can use anywhere, just a little cheaper in the long run I hope, and it offers some control over those nuisance calls.

Any one know why my one year old mac book pro which I have just upgraded to mountain lion, now runs the fan for even the slightest thing, just getting mail the fan comes on.

Today's photo I lifted from wired magazine, re an excellent article in this months Wired UK electronic version on what I think will be the future of computing, take a look at the video on wired magazine from Natan Linder, remember the computer in ironman this is the robotic arm in the film, but it projects the screen onto the desktop and is also the interface, very cool, add Siri or a voice interface and you have it. The video below is very interesting to, it has the video above, but Natan expands a little on the use and perhaps the future, for instance why not connect your iPad, or iPhone as the computer !!, perhaps both, double power .

Architectural Technologist – Vertical Garden

On our way home through Paris recently, we passed by Patrick Blanc’s Vertical Gardens, it’s a fantistic sight, especialy at the begigning of summer, all the plants are at their best, but more importantly it shows just how well this idea can transform a bland wall, into a living organism. Try doing a google search to find just loads more and some excellent pictures.

Inhabit have a great article on Patric Blanc’s building, with a load of excellent links. The BBC garden program this week from the NEC Birmingham had an excellent wall vertical garden, that local people were populating with plants. Made from a wall of reinforced plasic with pockets for plands it stood about 6′ high and I must admit it looked vey good, far better than a bland timber fence.

Amongs the many benefits, air quality, visual, insect home, thermal, water shed, but keeping the plants live in drought, and weights, plant replacement, also come to mind. But adding this to your general CPD is I think important, but not high priority, still I shall add 1/2 hour.

Generally we as Technologists tend not to get involved with gardening, but this brings on a whole new concept, so perhaps the green among you might want to add a little line to your CV showing your prowess in Vertical garden design. I have added quite a few links below to sites showing a similar outlook or having Vertical garden design info.

Don’t forget, I will host a tech hangout every Thursday @ 12:30 pm, a change from my Friday haunt, call in to chat, moan, find out something, anything to do with Architectural Technology. follow me on Google + “+stevescaysbrook”

Architectural Technologist – Building Sensor pads

English: LVDT sensor

Image via Wikipedia

It’s now quite clear, that sensor pads are becoming cheaper, and more usable, so why are we not detailing then into our construction to monitor things like moisture, or movement, , temp, or perhaps noise. For more read this excellent article on O’Reilly Radar

GreenGoose looks to unlock the data in everyday activities.

This company GreenGoose seem to have the ideal product,  their stickers are great for this because they’re simple, flexible and they easily stick to curved things like bottles, pipes etc. Also, existing objects or things around the house can be enabled with sensing capabilities by just sticking on a sticker. they’re taking everyday things and making them more fun. there’re also lowering barriers to adopting sensors by treating them in a playful way.

GreenGoose are trying to make it really easy. There’s no batteries to recharge or USB cables or software to worry about. The sensors last more than a year, and the range is over 200 feet, so it’s completely in the background.

This has to be looked into, as I find out more I’ll let you know, but in the mean time add it to your list, I have a feeling on this subject. its all to do with home automation, the smart home. Photo voltaic’s can easily power them although a years use before they require juice is dam good.

Architectural Technologist – A brief look into the future

Image representing Microsoft as depicted in Cr...

Image via CrunchBase

It’s important to keep an eye on the future, to keep track on current innovation and in particular see what the wild and wacky are thinking, you never know there might just be something in it.

Take for instance this flm below, done as it happens by Microsoft, it’s more about communication, and if you follow it back to youtube there a lot more, but back to this film, look deeper than the technology, look at the way materials are used, and the way we interact with every day furniture and the fabric of the building. Now suddenly this future film it touching on an area I know well, should I be taking note, is there a product here, or should I be thinking about the basic design of my next house.

What ever it’s so important to look and not just glance, look deeper, for instance glass is a material that seems to be forefront in a lot of these films, both in its internal use, its external use and in everyday objects, Apple was not wrong to use Gorilla glass to front both the back and front of the current iPhone, its sustainable, reusable and gan be easily laminated with circuits, it can turn easily from cloudy to translucent in less than a second.

We have seen lighting follow us around for some time and finaly it might be reality, I spoke of the room stat only a few days ago, and smart meters are finaly being installed, has the smart house finaly arrives,,,,,,, ! keep looking but above all, its important to a technologist to know ,,,,,,,,,,
