I watched the video below this morning, just because I was interested in how the Google experiment to lay a very fast fibre network in Kansas USA, had gone, or is going. The promise was of a super fast network with a lot of services, well, and here is the woow bit, they are achieving almost ,but not quite a gigabit service, the picture is a screen shot from the video below that shows they are achieving about 905 mb/s download and 794 mb/s upload speeds, now compare that to my BT system of 31 mb /s download speed and 10.1 mb/s. upload speeds, I thought mine was fast enough, but it pails in comparison.
So what has this to do with the Architectural Technologist, well consider this, where would you want to live, in a new estate or a complex that offers the google system, or one that Bt is offering, the chances are it would be google, and your life style would immediately be centred on their tv and other offerings, and for what cost, a new development, were cable access is already being laid, I can only think the marketing boys might be turning in their sleep wanting to get at google.
So the point here is yes, it has loads to do with us, I have not laid out a housing or flat development for a while, but given the chance, I might think that the cable network and internal installation might be a high priority. Not just for the things I can do with a super fast broadband, but for the sales.
No more hideous satalite dish things, no more snow or solar outages, just vey fast broadband,.
Take this further, if I wanted to move my office, and I was thinking of this a few years ago, the draw to any office is broadband speed, I want as fast as possible to shunt files about. I stayed put in my home office just because bt came along with there speed increase, and it's good in comparison to what's on the market, but had an office close by got google type speeds, I would have been drawn, no doubt.
Take yesterday for instance, I wanted to distribute a set of files a CPD provider, the Concrete Centre, sent me, so I uploaded them to my public Dropbox account, no problem, but it took a while it was not instant, with the google system that would have been instant.
The CPD, if your wondering, is all about marketing, not broadband, it's about designing something that will sell, and offer increased value to a property.
