Architectural Technologist – How fast is FAST

I watched the video below this morning, just because I was interested in how the Google experiment to lay a very fast fibre network in Kansas USA, had gone, or is going. The promise was of a super fast network with a lot of services, well, and here is the woow bit, they are achieving almost ,but not quite a gigabit service, the picture is a screen shot from the video below that shows they are achieving about 905 mb/s download and 794 mb/s upload speeds, now compare that to my BT system of 31 mb /s download speed and 10.1 mb/s. upload speeds, I thought mine was fast enough, but it pails in comparison.

So what has this to do with the Architectural Technologist, well consider this, where would you want to live, in a new estate or a complex that offers the google system, or one that Bt is offering, the chances are it would be google, and your life style would immediately be centred on their tv and other offerings, and for what cost, a new development, were cable access is already being laid, I can only think the marketing boys might be turning in their sleep wanting to get at google.

So the point here is yes, it has loads to do with us, I have not laid out a housing or flat development for a while, but given the chance, I might think that the cable network and internal installation might be a high priority. Not just for the things I can do with a super fast broadband, but for the sales.

No more hideous satalite dish things, no more snow or solar outages, just vey fast broadband,.

Take this further, if I wanted to move my office, and I was thinking of this a few years ago, the draw to any office is broadband speed, I want as fast as possible to shunt files about. I stayed put in my home office just because bt came along with there speed increase, and it's good in comparison to what's on the market, but had an office close by got google type speeds, I would have been drawn, no doubt.

Take yesterday for instance, I wanted to distribute a set of files a CPD provider, the Concrete Centre, sent me, so I uploaded them to my public Dropbox account, no problem, but it took a while it was not instant, with the google system that would have been instant.

The CPD, if your wondering, is all about marketing, not broadband, it's about designing something that will sell, and offer increased value to a property.

Architectural Technologist – Off line for broadband upgrade

At long last, my village, has had fibre optic cables installed by BT, so at long last, I can upgrade to a faster brodband, this brings both joy and heart ache, the joy is the speed, 20 mbs download and 6 mbs upload, the heart ache is the transfer over, last time I had it done, I was off line for the best part of the day, and it took me sveral days to get everything working again, particularly email, so as I write this on Sunday morning, I’m wondering if when you read this I will be online. will my email work, will I be able to get a wifi signal, will the phone site work, , will it be trouble free, so many variables !.

So gang, I get my super fast broadband installed on Tuesday 27th Sept, UK time, I’m looking forward to the speed and screen loading, instantly, I hope, still last time I went through this, it took a day to sort, so I have post dated a couple of blogs for the day, hope you enjoy, I happen to live in an area where signal for my iPhone is, well poor, so I might just have to go to the pub to grab their signal to pick up mail, hang in there I have not gone.

Architectural Technologist – Vectorworks training on Go to meeting

Just why is it that we in the Architectural profession are so slow to adapt to the new technology available to us, I have to give a presentation is a few weeks to show a practice whats available and how to do it online, and to my utter surprise, they have blocked youtube and facebook because they think staff should not be using these site, well my back was up,,,,,, and I had to explain just what the benefits would be to allow full access to the net, so what if someone takes ten minutes to look at facebook, its not so long and most places staff tend to work more hours than they are paid for anyway, and the benefits are huge, one such major is Go To Meeting

My good friend Jon pickup uses this service a lot and I think its well worth the small price. It costs, just to not attend a site meet and explain a detail, do it on line instead, the saving is real time. As an example of this technology I attemded Jons Vevtorworks  training, jon went very quickly through the same format as he issued in his more lengthy paid for training modulle. One thing though unless you have your computer set up correctly you will miss out on te iteraction, the requirements are not huge just a decent headset with a speaker boom, and broadband, the better / faster it is the better, I have a modest slow system and did not have any trouble at all.

The other item I push a lot is Google mail, many preactices just collapce if the mail server goes down and in some cases I know of a all mail was

lost completely due to a server failing, so why do practeces not use Google mail, the content is safe and you don’t have to worry about continuity, it just works, and the side benifits from using your account in other Google services are huge.
